Kim Newns - Find Your Voice and Use It

In the words of Jerry Seinfeld;

“According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.”

This world needs your voice. We must encourage people to face this fear, to step up, to find our voice and use it.

I launched my voice when I switched careers from years of studying accounting, to following my dream of being an Artist. I participated in an art show and was afterwards asked to do a paid art demo.

Wow.. cool! I was going to get paid to show people how I paint.

Then I was terrified. What would I say to these people for 90 minutes? But how could I say no to a paid art gig?

I had to try.

I survived the art demo and was approached by an audience member who suggested I come to her public speaking group; Toastmasters. I was curious, yet terrified.

Again, I knew I had to try.

My heart was pounding, my nerves a fluster, when I saw the sign, and entered that Toastmasters meeting room. Once in, I was greeted kindly with warm smiles and welcoming handshakes.

My fears fell down and I knew that I was in a safe space to find my voice.

Not only has this practice helped me overcome certain fears, but it has translated to different areas of my life. I am learning how to communicate what I want through words in situations I'd have previously found difficult.

Although at first I was red faced and shaking with nerves, I've now found my confidence. But there are always new challenges to step up to, and fears to overcome.

There are so many things we need to speak up about, and we need voices of truth.

There are; personal, environmental, political and financial strains in need of our immediate attention.

In the words of Toastmasters Founder Ralph Smedly;

"Understanding comes through communication, and through understanding we find the way to peace. Toastmasters gives us the tools to be able to communicate effectively and be leaders."

There are many solutions that we need to research and talk about. Smedly said; "Faultfinding without suggestions for improvement is a waste of time."

I invite YOU to be part of the solution!

Great speeches can lead change. For example;

Winston Churchill’s 'Now we are masters of our own fate.'
Martin Luther King Jr’s 'I have a dream.'
Malala Yousafzai's 'Books not Bullets'

Regardless of your age, experience, or knowledge, you have the power within to discover your voice.

Toastmasters provides opportunities for weekly practice in a supportive environment. As a novice speaker, it has helped me learn to use my breath, gather my thoughts and deliver my messages.

I'd like to help people find their voices to create a world where everybody can communicate effectively.

If you want to shape this world, you need a voice.

Step up, find your voice - and use IT!
